Nikon’s Style Series line is one we adore for successfully merging design and power. The S8000 certainly does not disappoint! It continues the trend of narrowing the gap between high end, image-focused SLRs and conveniently pocket-sized point-and-shoots (we’re still partial to the Cannon powershot S90, but read on friends, this isn’t a bad alternative).

The diminutive camera, at 14.2 megapixels with full 10x optical zoom, ranks thinnest in its class. Barely larger than a pack of cigarettes, it’s a handy everyday choice for the discerning photographer. I had a sneak preview of one last month and was really pleased with its feel and performance.

Along with an increased start-up period and shutter-release time over previous models, Nikon added a four-way image stabilization system to compensate for its small, hard-to-steady proportion. An advanced flash feature promises more natural-looking images by boosting ISO settings and shutter speeds in low light.

Other new features include a 30-frame-per-second HD movie capability, high-speed photo shooting, with up to four shots per second, and a three-inch 921,000-dot LCD screen.

The S8000 retails for $300 and comes in red, bronze and champagne silver, in addition to the black model shown above.

“Symbian enables us to bring smartphones to more and more people and ensures scale for our solutions and compelling services, such as Skype. We’re seeing around 1.5 million downloads a day on Ovi Store now and believe that the Skype client for Nokia smartphones will have wide appeal to Symbian users,” said Jo Harlow, Senior Vice President for Smartphones, Nokia.

“Skype, the king of Internet communications, running on Symbian, the world’s dominant smartphone platform, makes for an explosive combination,” said Larry Berkin, Head of Global Alliances and GM USA, Symbian Foundation. “With Symbian’s global reach, Skype is that much closer to becoming the ubiquitous real-time communications platform for hundreds of millions of Symbian-based mobile users.”

Russ Shaw, General Manager, Mobile at Skype said, “With Skype for Nokia smartphones, more than 200 million smartphone users worldwide** will be able to take the Skype features they love with them on the move. Alongside Skype’s relationships with operators and handset manufacturers worldwide, making Skype available direct to consumers will help millions of users keep in contact with the people that are important to them without worrying about the cost, distance or whether they are away from a computer.”

Just because there’s no actual 3D programming beaming in to your TV set that doesn’t mean you can’t begin your preparation by purchasing the first 1080p 3D television sets to hit the market: the Samsung UN46C7000 and UN55C7000 LED units. The televisions are now available for order online at Amazon, Sears and other retailers.

The initial 3D sticker shock isn’t so bad; the 46-incher will cost $2,600 and the 55-inch will cost $3,300–the non-3D, 6000-series Samsung UN55B6000 actually costs the same as the UN55C7000. Of course, the active shutter glasses, 3D Blu-ray player, 3D cable package and other accompanying equipment will quickly drive that initial cost straight up, making the sticker aftershock a little more painful. Plus, none of those other little conveniences are yet on the market, so early buyers will have to endure a brand-new 3D television set without the 3D television.

In addition to 3D, the televisions offer Internet connectivity, Game Mode, ultra-slim design and 4 HDMI ports.

A mobile social networking program just for the gay boys is, simply put, genius. Just when we were sure all the stationary kind (you know, like facebook and connexion) would kill the sort of real-time cruising we so adore, Grindr swooped in to the rescue! Sure, we may now sometimes be more interested in that boy on our iPhone screen than the one sitting next to us at the bar, but at least with Grindr, we know that guy on our phone is only steps away…and sometimes he’s even in the same club! Grindr’s only been around for little more than a year but with an average of 1-2000 new members daily, Grindr is winning fans at record pace. In fact…there’s now 500,000 thousand guys on Grindr!

GRINDR CRAZE GROWS AT RAPID PACE, REACHES LANDMARK 500,000th MEMBER, CHANGES LANDSCAPE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING

(Los Angeles, CA, February 25, 2010) Today Grindr, the largest all-male mobile location-based networking service reached its landmark 500,000th member and is still growing. Since the inception of this innovative social networking application in early 2009, approximately 1,000 to 2,000 new users have been signing up every day. The Grindr craze has undeniably changed the game of social networking for gay and bisexual men around the world.

Grindr’s extraordinary growth is as revolutionary as the app itself and has significantly changed the ways in which guys are choosing to meet up with their friends, make new ones or find a friendly face in locations they are visiting. Whether you just want to know if any of your friends are nearby or are looking to see if there are other gay guys in your neck of the woods, Grindr has become the easiest, quickest and most simple way for guys to meet each other.

Joel Simkhai, Grindr’s founder and CEO “Grindr’s growth has come from one source, our users. Grindr users are telling their friends about Grindr, they are blogging and Twittering about Grindr, and posting their success stories on their Facebook status updates.”

The app, which runs on iPhone and iPod touch, uses location-based technology like GPS, cell towers and Wi-Fi to determine the user’s location. A quick tap delivers profiles, photos, and information of nearby guys. A user’s profile is available in seconds, as are chat functions and sending additional photos or even a user’s map location.

Simkhai adds, “We’ve been amazed with not only our growth but also by how engaged Grindr users are. A large number of users launch Grindr hourly and daily. Some guys leave it open for several hours a day. And when they change their location they will launch Grindr again to see who’s nearby” An unprecedented 30% of users check their Grindr daily, 44% check their accounts weekly. Best of all, the Grindr application is free.

“We’ve also been astonished that nearly half of our users are outside the United States. There are thousands of Grindr guys in London, Paris, Tokyo and Sydney. Even Tehran, Iran and Astana, Kazakhstan have Grindr guys.” 54% of Grindr users are based in the United States, 17% in the United Kingdom and 9% in Australia. France and Japan take the fourth and fifth top spots respectively.

Users love the no-hassle membership, simple interface and that privacy is always controlled by the user—users can share as much or as little info as they desire.

To fill the need of Grindr users who want even more access to guys nearby—there is now a premium (extra) version for only $2.99 a month. Grindr X(tra) lets users see up to 200 more guys who are close-by (100 more than the free version allows) and it’s ad free. Grindr X(tra) also uses Push Notification, allowing users to receive messages when they are not online. Grindr and Grindr X(tra) work with both the iPhone and iPod Touch but will be available on the BlackBerry and other platforms in the near future.

Visit www.Grindr.com for more information.

To download Grindr, please visit www.getGrindr.com and to download Grindr X(tra), please visit www.GrindrXtra.com.

Zune HD always mystified us…not for its design or its features, but more so because no one ever thought of taking this little device and stuffing it with phone capabilities. But it looks that as of Christmas time 2010 we’ll have just that with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series. Destined to be a complete overhaul of their phone software, it will take a more lifestyle-centric approach while remaining productivity-friendly. Rather than using a convention icon-based layout, Windows Phone 7 has a more organic layout with rich animations and real-time updates based on your social media feeds and messages. The phone also takes on the full Zune music player experience and they’ve even thrown in a mobile version of Office for editing and sharing documents.

Lovers of fine looking cameras with mucho shallow pockets, Pentax has just released your dream camera. The compact point-and-shoot I-10 is obviously inspired by classic film SLRs of the fifties and sixties, complete with a leatherette body in either black or cream to add a classy touch to the retro body. While not a high-end camera, it boasts some great features: 12.1 MP sensor, a large 2.7-inch LCD, face-detection, 720p video-capture and Triple Shake Reduction technology that allows for crisp images in low-light situations. Coming in at only $300, it is the perfect option for the not-so-savvy photographer who’s big on style.

Why you can’t truly multitask on the iPhone will forever remain one of those Apple mysteries (or conspiracies), but thanks to a new app you can enjoy more convenient multitasking during Web surfing. The iDroid Mini Browser app enables iPhone and iPod Touch users to enjoy up to four different tabs on the bottom of the screen–not exactly the experience you enjoy on your laptop, but at least you can easily bounce from tab to tab.

The app also enables users to add up to 9 favorite websites as Quick Links, and offers a tab preview with a simple tap and hold. The app provides full screen browsing with a quick tilt over to landscape mode. Best of all, it’s called iDroid–Apple can’t be smiling about that one.
